Grady's 2nd Annual Fundraiser Burks Falls

Well it is July again for Grady's Paddle for Sick Kids Hospital.  July 9th, 2011 was a great day on the water.  Last year I did the ride by Kayak and had a hard time with a bad shoulder on  the ride.  This year I decided at the last minute to take my pedal bike and I was able to rest my shoulders and just use my legs for the ride.  It turned out fantastic.  My 6 year old Katie was able to ride with me and the rest of my family and friends were using Kayaks.  We had 6 people in total ride and we plan to try and encourage more to come out next year.  We did two fund raisers on our own to raise money and my kids did most of the work.  It was great to see my kids get involved and give up some of their time to help others.
Next year we plan to work harder to raise more money.   For more information on Grady's Paddle visit http://www.almaguin-vacation.com or visit http://www.sandlake.on.ca

My Trip on the Magnetawan River for Grady

I was invited to go on a paddle in Burks Falls to raise money for Sick Kids Hospital for a child that died with a congenital heart defect.  I was really happy that I could take part in an event that could help other children at Sick Kids Hospital.
I kayaked on the river with my husband and the other two couples that joined us paddled in canoes.  I went into this ride with a rotator cuff injury knowing that I would not last too long.  I managed to only kayak about 10km and my husband pulled me with his kayak for another 5km until we found a pull out.  Our friends did about 22km.  It was a great fund raiser and I am looking forward to doing it again next year.
I think next year I will start at the half way point and do the last half of the ride so I can join in on the barbecue at the end of the ride.
An event like this also brings money to our small local communities which is great for local businesses.  We own a cottage resort and a vacation directory and we are hoping that next year this event will bring more vacationers to the Almaguin Highlands area.  Our friends also rent out cottages in the area and they are hoping also that this event brings more money to the community.
The surrounding areas to book cottage rentals near this event is Magnetawan, Burks Falls, Sprucedale, Kearney, Emsdale and Katrine.
